I’ve always loved walking. There’s something about the freedom that you feel when allowed to roam unfettered in the English countryside. We are truly blessed in this country. There are so many stunningly beautiful places to visit in this country if you take the time to search for them.
The English summer is frequently far too short but when it comes there is no better place to be than England’s green and pleasant land. Of all the wonderful places to visit though there is one that stands, in my humble opinion, head and shoulders above all the others. The Dorset coastline.
Keen walkers and ramblers and lovers of the countryside are truly blessed in Dorset. Famous for its Jurassic coastal walks which are a popular attraction for Geologists as well as ramblers, and historic castles, Dorset draws tourists from all over the UK year after year after year.
Amongst the superb accepted trails for dedicated walkers and casual tourists alike are the Portland Bill which is a 3 mile walk starting at the incredibly photogenic Portland Bill lighthouse and is a marvelous spot for birdwatchers, so don’t forget your binoculars!
If you are looking for something more challenging but no less spectacular then the 4 mile walk around West Lulworth and Daggers gate is a must. This walk takes from the West Lulworth Downs along the South Western Coastal Path to Durdle Door (carved by the sea from the Portland and Purbeck rocks), and Lulworth Cove. Think Smugglers and merchant ships struggling against the storm and ending up with their lost cargo’s washed up on the beach. A great place to visit for any budding young Pirate!
The Christchurch Blue Plaque Walk is ideal for those seeking a more leisurely stroll through the historic town of Christchurch. Beginning at Place Mill this walk takes in some of the town’s Millennium Plaques. Discover the history of Christchurch which has been an English settlement since the time of the Saxons.
Dorset is an incredible place to visit if you love walking, but fresh air and exercise isn’t the limit of its attractions. It is probably one of the most family-friendly places in the UK offering such delights as Sherborne Abbey, Corfe Castle, the Dinosaur Museum at Dorchester and the Tank Museum near Wareham which has the largest collection of Armoured fighting vehicles in the UK with almost 300 vehicles and frequently hosts thrilling exhibitions.
When you are tired of walking there’s also the Swanage Railway. Take an exhilarating trip on an award-winning, standard gauge, preserved steam railway, offering intensive heritage steam and diesel train rides. Experience a unique journey through six miles of beautiful Dorset scenery. On your journey you will pass the magnificent ruins of Corfe Castle. You will also get to view many of the county’s historic villages, countryside and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, all without the stress of driving and parking.
Best of all the accommodation in the county is a really high standard yet still reasonably priced. For families of any size, groups of friends or walking or cycling clubs you can hire some incredible properties for a price way lower than an equivalent hotel. My wife and I chose a gorgeous little retreat in Martinstown near Dorchester a short drive from the Jurassic coastline. We got it through a company called Dorset Hideaways. They offer the finest selection of hand-picked holiday cottages in Dorset. Their website was incredibly easy to navigate, and they had such a wide range of fabulous properties to choose from. The apartment we picked was beautifully furnished, spotlessly clean and the situation was just idyllic. Perfect spot for some much needed time away from the pressures of the city.
We have included a few examples of the marvelous properties available for rent with Dorset Hideaways in the gallery above. For further information about what is on offer we totally recommend that you visit the website and discover for yourself the great selection of properties and amazing things to do in the beautiful county of Dorset.
